According to an ancient story, the church was built after St. Francis’s preaching which took place in Pisa around 1211; in fact, two of his Pisan followers, Agnello and Alberto, erected the first Franciscan building. The architectonic structure of the church reflects the typical Franciscan style: simple lines, poor materials, but vast sizes (18 m x 70 m).
Noteworthy is the bell tower without supporting columns, which does not rest on the ground, but on the two sides of the nave and is supported by two big stone shelves. A part of the church became a civic museum in 1899 and is now a school, while the inner cloister is used by the parishioners. The building houses 17th-century paintings and original glass doors.

Torre dei Belforti o Torre Civica, Montecatini Val di Cecina - Pisa in Toscana
La Torre dei Belforti si eleva solitaria sul punto più alto del paese e rappresenta l’elemento emergente di quello che fu il sistema difensivo di cui permangono altre torricelle più piccole e di forma rotonda che probabilmente delimitavano la cinta muraria e la via d’accesso al castello. È una costruzione con base quadrangolare risalente all’XI secolo, con mura a filaretto in conci di pietra nera e di straordinario spessore. Considerando i due metri e mezzo d’interrato si può ritenere che la sua altezza originale fosse di oltre trenta metri; la parte inferiore è a fasce bianche e nere alternate. Ormai priva del coronamento merlato, la torre appartenne a varie famiglie volterrane (Belforti, Pannocchieschi e Inghirami) e fu sede dei Capitani di Volterra e Firenze fin quando non andò in mano ai francesi baroni de Rochefort.
