Messina lies on the north-east coast of Sicily on the Strait of the same name separating the island from the mainland.
Founded as Zancle in the second half of the 8th century BC. by Chalcidian Greeks, its name was changed to Messene in about 490 BC. with the arrival of settlers from Messenia. Later conquered by Syracusans, Mamertines and Carthaginians, it came under the influence of Rome in 264 BC. After the fall of the Empire, Messina was dominated by the Goths before passing to Byzantium in 553 and Arab rule in 843. It became a Norman possession in 1061. From this date, its history was that of the Kingdom of Sicily. Messina was on several occasions struck by an earthquake and the last, in 1908, almost destroyed it completely, claiming over 60,000 victims.

Messina in Sicilia - Santa Maria Alemanna
La chiesa risale alla metà del Duecento e fu fondata, insieme ad un ospedale contiguo, dai Cavalieri Teutonici: da qui il nome di "Alemanna" con cui è ancora oggi nota. I Cavalieri avevano qui il loro priorato e si servivano dell'ospedale per accogliere i reduci della Terra Santa e prestar loro cura. Dell'ospedale antico rimane una piccola traccia sotto forma di un archetto ogivale e un frammento murario nei pressi degli absidi della chiesa.
Quest'ultima, abbandonata dai cavalieri alla fine del XIV secolo e colpita da un fulmine all'inizio del Seicento, fu poi ulteriormente danneggiata dal terremoto del 1783 che ne fece crollare la facciata. Oggi è in via di restauro, dopo essere stata smontata pietra per pietra per permetterne il consolidamento. Un bel portale di questa chiesa che rappresenta, per essere stata costruita da maestranze germaniche, il più puro esempio di architettura gotica della Sicilia, si trova al Museo.
