Piedmont lies in a peripherical position with respect to the rest of Italy but its relative proximity to the sea and contact with France and Switzerland have, over the centuries, led to the creation of an important commercial transit network which has favoured its present economic development.
This is the largest region of continental Italy, second only to Sicily. Its density of 174 inhabitants per sq km. makes it the fifth most densely populated region in Italy, and slightly under the national average.
The Italian regions which border with Piedmont are Valle d'Aosta to the northwest, Lombardy to the east, Emilia-Romagna to the southeast and Liguria to the south.

Entlang der „strada delle grange“ - Vercelli in Piemonte
Entlang der Straße, die von Larizzate nach Crescentino führt und auch den Namen „strada delle grange“ trägt, kommt man nach Lignana und zum herrlichen Landgut „Tenuta Veneria“. Diese ländliche Ansiedlung, die ein beispielhaftes Muster für den großen einzelbetrieblichen Hof darstellt, diente als Hintergrund für den bekannten neorealistischen Film „Riso amaro“ (bitterer Reis) von Regisseur Francesco De Santis. Weiter entlang dieser Straße kommt man nach „Castell’ Apertole“, einer Ansammlung von Gebäuden, die 1774 von der Familie Savoia erbaut wurden und für die Pferdezucht bestimmt waren. In der unmittelbaren Umgebung von „Castell’ Apertole“ befindet sich das Bauernhaus „Cascina Colombara“, ein noch immer bewirtschafteter landwirtschaftlicher Betrieb, der ein weiteres hervorragendes Beispiel für ein Bauernhaus mit abgeschlossenem Hof darstellt und der seine ursprüngliche Umgebung bewahren und nutzen konnte.
