Piedmont lies in a peripherical position with respect to the rest of Italy but its relative proximity to the sea and contact with France and Switzerland have, over the centuries, led to the creation of an important commercial transit network which has favoured its present economic development.
This is the largest region of continental Italy, second only to Sicily. Its density of 174 inhabitants per sq km. makes it the fifth most densely populated region in Italy, and slightly under the national average.
The Italian regions which border with Piedmont are Valle d'Aosta to the northwest, Lombardy to the east, Emilia-Romagna to the southeast and Liguria to the south.

Le Puncetto Valsesiano - Vercelli en Piemonte
Nul ne peut dire le nom de celui qui a réalisé le premier puncetto ni quand cela a eu lieu: la seule chose certaine est qu’il s’agit d’un art inventé autrefois par les femmes de la Valsesia, lesquelles, bien que marquées par les efforts et les peines du quotidien, ont su créer des chefs-d’œuvre de précision et de patience.
Le puncetto se perpétue depuis des siècles et depuis toujours on le réalise en utilisant uniquement fil et aiguille, en unissant entre eux des milliers de petits nœuds et en créant, avec la succession de pleins et de vides, de précieuses broderies qui ensuite étaient destinés à décorer les vêtements, les meubles et les fenêtres.
