Lombardy covers approximately the centre of the Po Valley, as well as extending over the middle of the Italian Alps. It borders with Switzerland to the north, Emilia-Romagna to the south, Piedmont to the west and Trentino-Alto Adige and Venetia to the east. The region (23,856 sq km.) is only the fourth largest in Italy though it is unquestionably the most densely populated (c. 8,879,000); the population density (372 inhabitants per sq.km) makes Lombardy the second region, after Campania; 1/14 of the country's entire population is concentrated in the Province of Milan.
History. Three distinct natural zones can be fairly easily distinguished in the Lombardy region: mountain, hill and plain. Sotto il Monte Giovanni XXIII - Bergamo
Wer von der Ebene aus nach Sotto il Monte Johannes XXIII. gelangt, hat den Eindruck, als ob das Dorf vom Turm des beiligen Johannes beberrscht würde. Ursprünglich war der Turm bei der ersten Gemeindebildung als Burg gedacht, wurde dann aber zum Glockenturm der ersten Pfarrkirche una Johannes dem Täufer geweiht. Der antike Tempel wurde abgetragen, als begannen wurde, die neue Kirche zu errichten. Es verblieb nur der 17 Meter hohe Glockenturm als wertvolles Zeugnis rornanischer Baukunst.
Am 29. Oktober 1958 in der Morgendämmerung war der Hügel des heiligen Jobannes mit Feuern übersät. Auf diese Weise, drückten die Einwohner ihre Freude darüber aus, daß ein Gebürtiger aus ihrem Dorf zum Papst gewählt worden war. Seitdem hat sich Sotto il Monte sehr verändert. Unverändert bleibt jedoch die Erinnerung an Johannes XXIII., von allen der "gute Papst" genannt.
