Capital of Italy and Latium, the city lies 20 m. above sea level on the banks of the Tiber, in the Campagna di Roma. This is the most highly populated and largest city in Italy (municipality covering 1,507.6 sq/km.), an historical and cultural centre of extraordinary importance, the capital of the Roman Catholic Church.

A walk along the Tiber in Rome Italy
The Tiber and its island - Isola Tiberina - are the reasons for Rome being founded here, as this was the only place where the river could be crossed with ease and the spot where according to legend, Romulus and Remus were washed ashore. In imperial times, when a single wooden bridge straddled the Tiber, barges would carry obelisks from Egypt and marble from Tuscany to the very heart of Rome. Nowadays, 26 bridges link Rome with the Vatican, Janiculum and Trastevere.
