This is one of the largest Italian regions (the sixth), an intermediate zone linking the north with the centre of the country, the part of continental Italy joining the Italian peninsula; as such, it is of great importance from the point of view of communications.

La Sinagoga -The Synagogue in Carpi, Emilia Romagna
Inside the buildings on the narrow road of Via Giulio Rovighi, the Jewish community settled in the past centuries and in 1719 the ghetto was opened.
The Synagogue was located in the piazza of the wheat market. The portico was designed by Achille Sammarini and inaugurated with full ceremony in 1861.
The facade situated on the roadside shows some neoclassical severe lines; inside, the problem caused by the limited space to enter the Temple, was solved by the designer with the brilliant solution of a hollow staircase.

The large cult hall, decorated with stuccoes and scagliola facings, with gildings and monochromatic friezes, presents a Tabernacle with Corinthian fluted columns and round tympan and on the opposite wall, the women's gallery.
