Lying on the Tyrrhenian Sea in a sweeping curve between the mouth of the Garigliano and the Gulf of Policastro, Campania is chiefly a maritime region, a transit area and a node for the principal lines of communication which cross the Apennines, linking South Italy with the central-northern regions. It is the twelfth largest region, has the second highest number of inhabitants after Lombardy, and the highest density of population in Italy. It borders with Latium to the north-west, Molise to the north, Puglia to the north-east and Basilicata to the south. To the west it lies on the Tyrrhenian Sea.
History. Campania can structurally be divided into two clearly defined zones stretching northwest-southeast parallel to the coast. Inland rise the Campania and Lucanian Apennines, separated by the Sella di Conza (700 m.) and the upper Sele valley. About Arpaise
Arpaise is a small village, economically based on agriculture.
It is situated on a hill with Mount Partenio and Mount Taburno visible in the background.
The first historical data goes back to 1181, when it seems it belonged to a Norman landlord, Guglielmo.
In 1460 it became a feud of the De Capua family, then it belonged to the Princes of Riccia; later on, it was owned by the Capece Minutolo family and finally by the Della Leonessa family who were then the landlords up to the abolition of feudalism in 1806. The village got self-governing only on the unity of Italy in 1861.
It is renowned for being the birthplace of Generoso Pepe, founder of “Il progresso Italo-Americano”,a famous newspaper that Italian emigrants used to read in America.
