Lying on the Tyrrhenian Sea in a sweeping curve between the mouth of the Garigliano and the Gulf of Policastro, Campania is chiefly a maritime region, a transit area and a node for the principal lines of communication which cross the Apennines, linking South Italy with the central-northern regions. It is the twelfth largest region, has the second highest number of inhabitants after Lombardy, and the highest density of population in Italy. It borders with Latium to the north-west, Molise to the north, Puglia to the north-east and Basilicata to the south. To the west it lies on the Tyrrhenian Sea.
History. Campania can structurally be divided into two clearly defined zones stretching northwest-southeast parallel to the coast. Benevento: Periodo Pontificio in Campania
La morte di Landolfo VI (1077), ultimo principe Longobardo, segnò il passaggio di Benevento al dominio pontificio, che si protrarrà per molti secoli e durerà fino al 1860.
In questo lungo periodo Benevento subì alterne vicende, divenendo possedimento di Federico II e poi di Manfredi che, nel 1266, combattendo contro Carlo D’Angiò,trovò la morte e temporanea sepoltura “in cò del ponte” (Dante, Purgatorio, Canto III).
Feudo della Chiesa, venne governata prima da un rettore, poi da un governatore, infine, dopo il Congresso di Vienna, da un Delegato Apostolico. Fu occupata nel 1806 dalle truppe francesi di Napoleone che la concesse in feudo, col titolo di Principato, a Carlo Maurizio Talleyrand, suo Ministro degli Esteri, che la curò da lontano mediante un Governatore.
